Do we Tolerate too much?
We often come across family, friends, colleagues, or clients who are having difficulty in their lives because they are putting up with situations or people, indeed we have all experienced situations where we tolerate certain things that are not good for us.

Before we begin it is important to distinguish between things that we tolerate from a respect perspective, and those things that we tolerate that hold us back, cause us grief, waste our time and energy, the ones that drain us. The definition on Wikipedia is “the practice of deliberately allowing or permitting a thing of which one disapproves”. The second part of the definition is particularly thought provoking “One can meaningfully speak of tolerating, i.e. of allowing or permitting, only if one is in a position to disallow”. “…the two nouns ‘tolerance’ and ‘toleration’ have evolved slightly different meanings. Tolerance is an attitude of mind that implies non-judgmental acceptance of different lifestyles or beliefs, whereas toleration implies putting up with something that one disapproves of.”

Very often we make compromises on issues. Maybe it’s disrespect from someone we work with or a family member. Maybe some part of our role in a relationship doesn’t serve us well. Maybe something in our physical surroundings dampens our spirit. When we tolerate things essentially we are desensitising ourselves and are ‘turning a blind eye’ to that which does not support us.

When we tolerate things around us we are giving a clear sign to the Universe that we don’t feel worthy of better treatment and we end up living a life where we become mediocre. It is important to understand that putting up with things that don’t support us is not good for us. It is vital for us to make a stand and be willing and committed to living a life where we are free from tolerating that which makes us unhappy.

Make a list of ten things you are tolerating at home, and then decide how you could make the requests and/or take the actions to eliminate those items. Do the same for work. Make a list of ten things you are tolerating at work, and similarly take the actions to eliminate those items. Notice if you spend time complaining about these issues and go into victim mode, or whether you can take a stand on the issue. Take pride in standing up for yourself in situations where you might previously have been tolerating unsupportive behaviour. Take the next step to correct or improve things that have been bugging you. When you stop tolerating things, when you change your behaviour around these issues the people around you also change. Over time you will develop more confidence to speak up and change things, because you want to.

When you are writing your list put everything down even if you don’t know how to resolve the matter. The solution will come. Look for the key issue, which refers to something that you are putting up with which when handled, will resolve about 5 other issues. Make sure you get to, and handle the source of it or it will keep popping up again and again.

When contemplating the things in life that you tolerate be careful that you are maintaining high standards, and that you hold yourself to a high level of integrity in your behaviour. Beware of the trap of becoming self-righteous, and judgmental of others.
